Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge

Martha’s Vineyard, MA Attractions

The Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge is a wildlife refuge on Chappaquiddick Island. Spanning 516 acres, the area features a sandy shoreline, a salt marsh, a salt pond, and the historic Cape Poge Lighthouse. The barrier beach extends for seven miles from Wasque Point past the lighthouse. It is here that nutrient-rich waters attract striped bass, bonito, bluefish, and albacore. The refuge is also home to a gull rookery where piping plovers and other birds nest, perfect for birdwatching.

One of the best ways to explore the Cape Poge Wildlife Refuge is with an over-sand vehicle that will take you to the area’s marine habitats and popular fishing spots. For an offshore experience, paddle through the Poucha Pond. Or stretch your legs with a walk along the accessible two-mile walk at the Wasque Beach Uplands.

Getting there, take the Chappy Ferry from Edgartown drive roughly 2.5 miles down Chappaquiddick Road, and continue on Dike Road to the entrance.

The Chappy Ferry is an easy 15 minutes from Martha’s Vineyard Surfside Hotel, making a great day excursion during your Martha’s Vineyard vacation.
