A Dazzling Guide to Illumination Night Oak Bluffs

Every year, on the third Wednesday in August, Martha’s Vineyard transforms into a scene straight out of a fairytale. The annual Illumination Night Oak Bluffs is a summer staple that enchants both locals and visitors with its breathtaking display of thousands of colorful Japanese lanterns adorned on the iconic Gingerbread Houses. This magical evening is one you won’t want to miss, and it’s free to attend, so gather your friends and family and get ready to be dazzled!

A Historical Celebration

The tradition of Illumination Night began in 1869, originally celebrated as Governor’s Day to honor Governor William Claflin. In the following years, the Seaside Gazette coined the term “Illumination” for the event, a name that still lives on. This mesmerizing tradition has been illuminating Oak Bluffs for over 130 years now!

Today, cottage owners in the Oak Bluffs neighborhood of The Campground keep on this enchanting custom by adorning their quaint Victorian “gingerbread cottages” with an array of paper lanterns complemented by large paper and fabric umbrellas.

The Festivities Begin

The evening’s excitement kicks off at the Tabernacle. Be sure to arrive early, as prime seats fill up quickly for this Oak Bluffs tradition. We recommend securing a good spot at Trinity Park! The MVCMA  hosts a special musical program featuring a performance by the Vineyard Haven Band, followed by the Community sing-along. The lively music and audience excitement ramp up the magic of the night, making you feel like you’re a part of the Island community if visiting.

The Ceremonial Lighting

As the sun goes down, the ceremonial lighting of the first lantern occurs. This moment is steeped in tradition and symbolizes the official start of Illumination Night. Once dusk falls, all the lanterns are lit at once, transforming the campground into a vibrant, glowing wonderland. The lanterns cast a kaleidoscope of colors and a warm, enchanting glow over the cottages. It’s truly a feast for the eyes!
