Celebrating Martha’s Vineyard Juneteenth with History and Community

Martha's Vineyard sign on weathered building with dive flags

There’s something truly special about Martha’s Vineyard Juneteenth. It’s not just a day—it’s a feeling. A celebration that radiates joy, reflection, unity, and deep pride. When the island comes alive with music, stories, laughter, and community, you know you’re part of something meaningful.

What Juneteenth Is All About
On June 19, 1865, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, the last group of enslaved people in Galveston, Texas finally heard the news: they were free. That moment—filled with delayed justice and renewed hope—became Juneteenth. Today, it’s a celebration of Black freedom, strength, and culture across the country.

A Deep Connection to the Island
Martha’s Vineyard has its own layered history tied to Black heritage. By the end of the 1600s, the island was active in maritime trade, including the transatlantic slave trade. But by 1787, it had already started supporting abolition.

One of the most powerful names in the Vineyard’s past is John Saunders, a formerly enslaved man who brought Methodism to what we now know as Oak Bluffs. Fast-forward to the early 20th century, Oak Bluffs had become a rare refuge—a welcoming retreat for Black families during segregation. That legacy still thrives today.

How the Island Celebrates Juneteenth
Juneteenth on Martha’s Vineyard is a vibrant, multicultural celebration. Think music that gets your feet moving, speakers who stir your soul, and food that brings everyone together. All around the island, you’ll find events that honor Black culture—walking tours, live art, poetry, family activities, and meaningful conversations. Kids get to create, learn, and celebrate in their own way. Adults get to reconnect, reflect, and rejoice.
