How Big is Martha’s Vineyard?

A common question many visitors ask is, “How big is Martha’s Vineyard?” Our small island is a summer haven for many of those who live on the east coast but also for those visiting from around the world. Whether you are attracted to the photographic landscape opportunities, the restaurants and nightlife, or the outdoor activities, Martha’s Vineyard is an island for all, regardless of its small size.

How big is Martha’s Vineyard?

Martha’s Vineyard is nine miles wide and 26 miles long at its furthest points; with the total land area at approximately 96 square miles. It is the 58th largest island in the U.S. and the third-largest on the East Coast.

Where is Martha’s Vineyard located?

Martha’s Vineyard is located roughly seven miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Access to the island is available by way of various shuttles, water taxis, and ferries. Most are seasonal and only run from Memorial Day weekend through October. In the winter months the only ferry that runs is through Steamship Authority.

Getting around the island is easy with bicycles, mopeds, cars, buses, trolleys or taxis. Bicycle and moped rentals are available steps from The Surfside. The Vineyard Transit Authority bus operates on the island year-round and there is a bus stop adjacent to most hotels, including Martha’s Vineyard Surfside Hotel. The bus will take you to all major points on the island and it is frequent and inexpensive.

Why is the island named Martha’s Vineyard?

The name Martha comes from a British sailor named Bartholomew Gosnold, who in 1602 named the island after his daughter Martha, and the vine-like vegetation found along the shoreline. That is where the biggest misconception about Martha’s Vineyard comes into play, there are actually no vineyards on the island.

The towns of Martha’s Vineyard

The island is home to six small towns, each with its own unique charm and character.

Edgartown

Edgartown is the quintessential New England village with stately summer homes, which include historic whaling captain homes, and luxury waterfront homes, all balanced by quaint inland cottages. The area is known for its yachting events, the Edgartown Lighthouse, and the MV Museum. The island of Chappaquiddick is also part of Edgartown.

Vineyard Haven

Home to the island’s largest harbor, Vineyard Haven features a bustling port with ferries that operate year-round. The town is known for its bustling downtown, art scene, and the West Chop Lighthouse. Located just 10 minutes from Oak Bluffs, Vineyard Haven is a great option for a day trip when staying in Oak Bluffs.

Oak Bluffs

Best known for its Victorian-era architecture of the gingerbread cottages of the historic Methodist Camp Meeting Grounds. Oak Bluffs is also home to the other ferry port (in addition to Vineyard Haven) on the island making it an ideal landing place for those visiting. Other notable attractions include the Flying Horses, nation’s oldest continuously-operating carousel and the famous Inkwell Beach, which are all just minutes away when you stay at Martha’s Vineyard Surfside Hotel.

West Tisbury

Located inland, West Tisbury is best known for its landscape with its rolling hills, freshwater ponds, and picturesque winding roads. Ideal for those who want to spend time outside, the area features numerous hiking and biking trails for exploration. It is also home to the oldest continually-operating business on the island, Alley’s General Store.

Chilmark

Home to the famous fishing village of Menemsha, Chilmark is a quiet retreat nestled amongst tiny fishing villages. And for this reason, it is also a great place to enjoy a lobster roll at the Menemsha Fish Market. It is located in the southwest part of the island, near neighboring Aquinnah.

Aquinnah

Reaching the island’s most western point are the beautiful beaches of Aquinnah. The sandy shorelines stretch reach out as far as the eye can see where they meet up with towering clay cliffs that guard the beach. Atop the cliffs rests the iconic Gay Head Lighthouse.  It is probably the least developed area on the island making it a great option to retreat for a quiet day on the beach.

The landscape

Roughly one-third of the island is protected. Meaning, you won’t find our beaches dotted with big fancy hotels or restaurants. All commercial business and residential and rental homes reside in the small towns throughout the island, leaving much of the protected landscape open to miles of hiking and biking trails, along with miles of sandy shoreline and ocean views.
